One of the wonders of art is that
it is almost impossible to define. Is art the finished piece,
a work framed masterfully, arranged in impressive order for
public viewing? Or is it the journey in which a thousand
discoveries take shape to leave their mark on the artist?
Reata believes one is not
possible without the other. The collection you now see,
Men of the Cross, is a tribute to the personal
impression—and expression of art. Reata offers it
up as a tribute to men who have dedicated themselves to
the spiritual awakening of man.
In the late fall of 2005,
Reata was responding to her own “ artist's urging”
to create something new. She found a photo of Pope John
Paul II leaning on his pastoral staff. She knew
that she had to somehow commemorate his example of selflessness
and sacrifice.
What followed was a journey that introduced her to a local
priest who, after learning of her struggle to complete the
project, loaned her his crucifix and offered up his support.
His gesture inspired the next bit of art: all brush strokes
made in the finished piece are in the shape of a cross. How
fitting that the men who dedicated themselves to healing
the souls of men would themselves take shape by one of the
most recognizable symbols of sacrifice.
This first offering of the Men
of the Cross series is Benediction, a
tribute to Pope John Paul II, a man whose legacy of
hope and healing continues to bless us all.
